7:00 pm: Anger, Oppositionality and ADHD: What’s A Parent To Do??!!.
with Dr. Russell Barkley and W. Robert Nay, PhD

Dr. Russell Barkley, the author of “taking charge of ADHD,” has found that ADHD is a disorder of disinhibition. That is, the prefrontal cortex, which helps children pause before they act, to “put the brakes on“ their emotions and actions, is not activated properly, creating a general level of impulsivity. This leads to inattention and a lack of focus, as the child cannot inhibit distractions, as well as some degree of acting out behavior, as the child is less able to think about possible consequences before acting-leading to repeated episodes of noncompliance, oppositional behavior and in some cases more serious aggression. I will be discussing how the brain works, and strategies to facilitate inhibition, while learning new alternative ways of achieving outcomes.

W. Robert Nay, PhD is a clinical psychologist practicing in McLean Virginia and Annapolis Maryland, also serving as a clinical associate professor at Georgetown medical school. He specializes in helping individuals, parents and others cope dyscontrol of emotions, with a special focus on managing anger and aggression. He has written three books, Including: “taking charge of anger” and “the anger management workbook.” He has trained over 10,000 health professionals in these strategies.
