Monthly Meetings
We meet at Severna Park United Methodist Church from 7:00pm to 9:20pm on the second Tuesday of each month (September through June). Meetings include refreshments and support groups and are open to non-members - please come out and join us!
Note: Drive around to the back of the church and park by the shed and playset at the far end of the building - we are in the corner room of the church. You can enter by either the side or the back door. We hope to see you soon!

7:00pm: Return to the Basics: Discipline and Behavior Change Strategies with Joyce Cooper-Kahn, Ph.D.
Do you find yourself repeating the same directions to your children over and over? Do you find yourself yelling too often? Do you sometimes wonder who is in charge in your house? This presentation will focus on 7 steps to effective discipline. We will address some of the unique challenges of behavior management and behavior change with AD(H)D youngsters, and there will be plenty of time for discussion as we consider together how to develop more effective discipline strategies.
Dr. Joyce Cooper-Kahn is a clinical psychologist who is well-known in the local community. She has been in practice for over 25 years, with a career that has focused on helping children, families and schools to successfully manage attention disorders, learning disabilities, and other behavioral and emotional challenges. She is the author, with Laurie Dietzel, Ph.D. of the award-winning book Late, Lost and Unprepared: A Parent's Guide to Helping Children with Executive Functioning. She is currently collaborating on a book for teachers on strategies for facilitating executive functioning in the classroom. A frequently invited speaker, both in the United States and abroad, Dr. Cooper-Kahn is enthusiastic in her efforts to create a better understanding of youth with AD/HD and executive functioning weaknesses. Dr. Cooper-Kahn maintains an active clinical practice in Severna Park, Maryland.

Charlie Peace, AFC is an Accredited Financial Counselor through The Institute for Personal Finance and the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE). Charlie works with Department of Defense employees at Ft. Meade Maryland to achieve better money management in their personal financial life. He also conducts one on one financial counseling sessions with individual employees both military and civilian. His goal is to help guide employees to better financial wellness.

7:00pm: ADHD and Substance Abuse: "Living With Both- Surviving and Thriving in Recovery" with Jeannie Dougherty, LCPC, Licensed Counselor
Ms. Dougherty will begin her presentation by defining ADHD and substance abuse and their statistics. She will then address concerns about ADHD medication and the long term risks of addiction. Other issues for discussion will include nature vs. nurture, prevention and treatment, and risky behavior.
Ms. Jeannie Dougherty, LCPC began her counseling career over ten years ago. She has worked with hundreds of clients helping them to seek balance in their lives. Her approach as a counselor and coach is to guide you in discovering your destructive patterns while creating new healthy habits. She assists her clients through their personal transformations with compassion and kindness. Your needs and your goals are her top priority and she will work with you to obtain optimal mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

7:00pm: "Neurocognitive Tools for the ADHD Toolbox: A Comprehensive Brain-based Treatment Approach" with Carol Ann Robbins, Ph.D.
Clinical PsychologistDr. Robbins will discuss evidence-based practical brain-enhancing strategies to improve cognitive functioning for both adults and children with ADHD. The areas that will be addressed include sleep management, nutrition, exercise, medication, meditation, nature exposure, enhanced cognitive-behavioral interventions, and brain-training techniques. Integrating these lifestyle changes and building the daily habits to support them will also be addressed. Parents will be instructed about how to teach these techniques to their children, and adults with ADHD will be learning how to use them for themselves. Dr. Robbins originally gave this talk at the National CHADD conference in Atlanta in November 2010 where it was well received.
Carol Ann Robbins, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in diagnosing and treating Attention Deficit Disorder across the lifespan. Dr. Robbins has been in private practice for 17 years, is the Clinical Director of the Annapolis ADHD Center, and also works with Dr. Kathleen Nadeau at the Chesapeake ADHD Center in Silver Spring, MD. Dr. Robbins is an Adjunct Faculty member at Anne Arundel Community College in the Department of Continuing Professional Education and an experienced speaker, presenting both nationally and locally, at various schools, government organizations, businesses, professional conferences and community forums. She recently co-authored a chapter on treating ADHD using the neurocognitive treatment approach in a book released by Wiley earlier this year, edited by Goldstein, S., Naglieri, J. A., & DeVries, M., entitled Learning and Attention Disorders in Adolescence and Adulthood: Assessment and Treatment (2nd ed.).

7:00pm: "Study for Success: Study skills strategies for ADD/LD students" with Janice T. Hubbard, M.S.
School CounselorMs. Hubbard, who received her M.S. in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University, has been a teacher and guidance counselor since 1977 and is currently a counselor for grades 5-8 at St. Mary's Elementary School. She has developed a successful Study Skills program for middle and high schools, teaching seminars across the state since 1985. Her course, featured in newspaper articles across the country, focuses on time management, learning techniques, organization, homework hassles, advocating for your child and test taking strategies. She also has a private tutoring practice working with students to enhance study skills, time management, and organization
