Monthly Meetings

We meet at Severna Park United Methodist Church from 7:00pm to 9:20pm on the second Tuesday of each month (September through June). Meetings include refreshments and support groups and are open to non-members - please come out and join us! 

Directions

Note: Drive around to the back of the church and park by the shed and playset at the far end of the building - we are in the corner room of the church.  You can enter by either the side or the back door.  We hope to see you soon!

7:00pm: "Developing ADD-Friendly Daily Habits to Improve Cognitive Functioning"
with Carol Ann Robbins, Ph. D., Psychologist

This presentation will address self-care and daily life-management strategies for individuals with ADHD.  Topics such as improving cognitive functioning through exercise, nutrition, sleep, brain training, and meditation, as well as how to develop habits will be discussed.

Carol Ann Robbins, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD across the lifespan.  She is the founder and Clinical Director of the Annapolis ADHD Center, and has been the Coordinator of the Anne Arundel County Chapter of CHADD since 2002.  Dr. Robbins has given numerous presentations on ADHD locally to schools, government agencies, APA, MPA, corporations, and organizations, and has been invited to speak at several national conferences.  She authored an article on ADHD and relationships published in an issue of In Session: Journal of Clinical Psychology devoted to ADHD in May 2005.  Dr. Robbins is also a licensed provider of Cogmed working memory training.

7:00pm: "ADHD: What is it? Myths and misconceptions"
with Andre Gvozden, MD, Pediatrician

The presentation will be an interactive discussion focusing on myths and misconceptions about ADHD and its treatment as well as scientific background supporting the neurobioligical causes of ADHD.

Andre Gvozden, MD is a pediatrician in Millersville who has been in private practice for 27 years with an emphasis on treating ADHD.  He is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland.

7:00pm: "The Parent as 'Therapist': Indispensible Strategies for Becoming a Behavioral 'Therapist' for your ADHD child."
with W. Robert Nay, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

Parents are present more than anyone in the life of a child. Behavior can be best assessed and treated in the home setting.  This brief workshop will offer parents powerful strategies that they can immediately implement to construct a behavioral change plan for whatever problem behaviors emerge in the life of their children.

W. Robert Nay, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice in McLean, Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland where he lives with his wife, Joyce.  He is also Clinical Associate Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine.  His book Taking Charge of Anger: Resolving Conflict, Sustaining Relationships and Communicating Effectively Without Losing Control (Guilford Press, 2004) has been well-received.  His new book: Overcoming Anger in Your Relationship: How to Break the Cycle of Arguments, Put-downs and Stony Silences will be published by Guilford Press in 2010.

7:00pm: "Matching Strategies to Your Individual Brain Functioning: One Size Does Not Fit All"
with Jon Sherbun, LCSW-C, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

This presentation will examine different aspects of ADHD functioning and how each can manifest in different presentations and patterns, and then match strategies to those manifestations.  We will also look generally at how to monitor one's own patterns to see specifically where the problem areas exist in one's brain functioning and identify strategies that effectively target those brain processes.

Jon M. Sherbun is a clinical social worker with over 30 years of experience, working in various inpatient and outpatient settings, including 19 years of private practice, and extensive post graduate education.  He specializes in ADHD, couples and family therapy, chemical dependency, compulsive disorders, trauma, adult children of alcoholics, codependency, and general mental health issues - mood disorders, anxiety and stress.  He is also trained in hypnosis and a certified practitioner in psychodrama and group therapy.  He works with adults and adolescents.

7:00pm: "ADHD: Consequences of Anxiety and Depression from Adolescence through Adulthood"
with Jack Vaeth, MD, Psychiatrist

Long before the diagnosis of ADD is presumed, let alone officially made, one often presents with complaints of anxiety or even anxiety induced depression.  If the latter conditions are treated, there is partial success, leaving one saying -- "I'm better, but something else just isn't right."  This presentation will explore interactions between anxiety/depression/ADD and how they ultimately sabotage one's optimal performance in life.  Treatments, with a pharmacological focus, will be presented.  Practical management issues will be emphasized.

Jack Vaeth, MD is a board certified general (adult) psychiatrist with further qualifications in adolescent psychiatry.  He attended medical school at the University of Maryland and did his residency at the Sheppard & Enoch Pratt Hospital.  Dr. Vaeth practices privately in Annapolis and Hunt Valley.  His interests include the treatment of mood/anxiety disorders as well as ADHD.  He can be contacted at Vaethmd@comcast.net

7:00pm: "Focus on Transitioning to Adulthood: Fostering Success" with Richard Silver, MD
Psychiatrist

Rick Silver, MD discusses the atmosphere, expectations, and creative strategizing involved for people meeting the challenges of transitioning from high school to young adulthood to adulthood.  Central to this process is a focus on gifts and talents, realization of inner resources, and organizing steps to successfully reach goals and create the life people want.  The presentation will be a group discussion including peoples' stories of issues, pitfalls, successes, and learnings.

Dr. Silver is a psychiatrist and Founder/Director of THRIVE, an integrated mental healthcare center in Columbia, Maryland.  He is a Western-trained psychiatrist with an integrative approach to healing and a specialty in Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder.  Dr. Silver received his medical degree and psychiatric training at the University of Maryland at Baltimore.  He also has a Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.  He is the father of three daughters, two of whom have ADHD and have inspired his specialty in this work.

7:00pm: "Study for Success: Study Skills Strategies for ADD/LD Students" with Janice T. Hubbard, M.S.
School Counselor

Janice T. Hubbard, who received her M.S. in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University, has been a teacher and guidance counselor since 1977 and is currently a counselor for grades 5-8 at St. Mary's Elementary School.  She has developed a successful Study Skills program for middle and high schools, teaching seminars across the state since 1985.  Her course, featured in newspaper articles across the country, focuses on time management, learning techniques, organization, homework hassles, advocating for your child and test taking strategies.  She also has a private tutoring practice working with students to enhance study skills, time management, and organization.

7:00pm: "AD/HD and Nutrition - Does It Really Help?" with Dr. Judith Valentine, PhD, CNC
Nutritionist

Learn the many ways in which diet and specific nutrients can help support your kids.  Become aware of foods that can make symptoms worse as well as nutritional approaches that can alleviate or relieve symptoms.

Dr. Valentine has spent over 25 years researching, writing and educating in the field of holistic nutrition, stress management and other health promoting - wellness - lifestyle options.  She has lectured for such diverse organizations as American Brain Tumor Association, USDA, National Security Agency (NSA), Women in Aviation International, Kaiser Permanente, NYL Care, Hospice of the Chesapeake, and Anne Arundel Medical Center.  She practices in the Annapolis area and has consulted with hundreds of clients and families.  Dr. Valentine often collaborates with local physicians, and has worked on clinical teams to case conference in order to improve outcomes for patients of all ages.
